With the economic downturn in 2008, the recent college graduates have had a tough time finding a job; however, according to the National Association of Colleges, hiring has raised 5% since last year–wow! According to a New York Times article, the most sought after majors when looking to hire are: accounting, economics, mathematics, and computing. So, if you are in college, or headed to college, or headed back to college, then look to one of those most marketable majors if they spark your interest!

The article also went on to discuss various majors and potential jobs for them. If you are a….

English Major: tailor your strengths of being able to write and communicate clearly, those are top notch qualifications in the job world

Philosophy Major: there aren’t many jobs out there, so try business, critical thinking is one of your strengths and it would a great tool in the business world

Health/Science Major: This is where the jobs are at! And you do not necessarily have to become a doctor–because lets be honest–not everyone has the personality or drive for med school, but nurses are in high demand, or physicians assistants, or even health systems management!

Besides tailoring your skills of your major, one must also bring out the life experience! Talk about being  a camp counselor, or any leadership experience you have! It may sound silly in a job interview but it is honest and show you have good work ethic. Part time jobs are also a great way to show your discipline–especially if you hold a job while going to school!

Talk to recent grads about how they got their jobs–talking it out with a younger person closer in age to you is more helpful than talking to a senior at the company simply because the job market has changed so much since they had their interviews!

“They [college grads] may not have the experience, but they do have the potential”–Dr. Brooks, the head of the Career Office at University of Texas.

Whatever happens, be passionate and enthusiastic about your future! Employers love someone who is interested and involved. Go conquer ladies!
